Forty five 1300 class locomotives were built for the Queensland Railways and delivery commenced in 1967. The class was primarily used on the Moura and Blackwater mine rail lines for coal transport and based at Gladstone, they were also used in general freight traffic. The locomotive class became surplus to Queensland Rail's requirements following mainline electrification.[3]
All class members were sold to Australian National for Tasmanian operations. Although all 45 locomotives arrived in Tasmania in three shipments only the better examples were placed into service.[3] When transferred the locomotives were classed as the ZC class and numbered on paper as ZC1 to ZC45.
As a result of the sale of the Tasrail operations of Australian National the remaining ZC class members were passed to Australian Transport Network (ATN) and were renumbered under the new number system introduced by ATN Tasrail in 1997.
Ten class members were sold to Morrison-Knudsen Australia (MKA) and with eight rebuilt as the MKA nose with a new design of cab and numbered MKA1-MKA4 for use at BHP's Whyalla to Iron Knob tramway.[4] Four of these being leased to a operator in Malaysia in August 1995 and latter returned to Whyalla. MKA1, MKA2, and MKA3 were sold to Pacific National to start up their new Queensland operations and MKA4, MKA7 and MKA8 sold to Pacific National Tasmania. MKA1, MKA2, and MKA3 were later transferred back from Queensland to Tasmania. MKA5 and MKA6 are in Sengal on lease for coal haulage.
During the Pacific National era the ZC class were withdrawn while MKA class members were sold back to Tasmania.
When the Tasmanian Government reacquired TasRail from Pacific National in 2009 ownership of the remaining ZC class transferred to the Tasmanian Government's new TasRail operation. All have been withdrawn from service with some remaining in storeage.[3]
